STUDIO NOTES
Studio Notes is a quiet space where I share the philosophy, materials, and processes behind my one-of-a-kind handmade ceramics. It’s here to give you an insight into how the pottery is made in the studio, and the care and thought behind each piece of homeware and tableware.
Why I Make One-of-a-Kind Ceramics

I create each piece to be unique, with its own character and story. Working this way allows me to respond to the clay, the glaze, and the moment, rather than repeating the same forms. Subtle variations and gentle irregularities emerge naturally, giving each object its own presence and personality. This approach ensures that the work is alive and personal, carrying quiet beauty into everyday rituals — from drinking tea to sharing a meal. Even within restraint and simplicity, each piece is singular, meant to be used, appreciated, and lived with.
Wabi-Sabi, the Aesthetic of Imperfection

Wabi-sabi is about finding beauty in imperfection, transience, and simplicity. It guides the way I make and the way I hope people experience my work. Tiny glaze variations, subtle shape shifts, and uneven textures are celebrated rather than hidden, allowing each object to carry the quiet story of its making and the passage of time.
Materials and Inspiration

I develop and make my own glazes, working, when I can, with locally sourced materials. Wood ash, clay, feldspar, calcium and other mineral elements shape the texture, color, and durability of each piece. These materials interact with heat and time in unpredictable ways, creating surfaces that are rich, tactile, and singular. Each batch is an experiment and a conversation with the materials, inspired by Japanese ceramics and a love of quiet, everyday rituals.
Glazing and Firing Process

The surface of each piece is formed through careful layering of glazes and controlled firing. I use an electric kiln at high temperatures (1200C-1220C), allowing glazes to flow and settle naturally. Slight variations in color, texture, and form emerge naturally from the firing process, giving each piece a sense of life and depth. The results are often unpredictable, but that unpredictability is part of the work’s charm — the textures, shades, and subtle imperfections give life to each piece.
Structured Simplicity

Some pieces explore a slightly more structured form, with clean lines and carefully considered proportions, allowing the natural textures of the clay to take center stage. Even here, the philosophy of one-of-a-kind creation is present: subtle irregularities, personal touches, and quiet variations give each object its own character. This balance of restraint and individuality shows that simplicity and thoughtful structure can coexist with the imperfection and life inherent in handmade ceramics.
Philosophy of Use

My ceramics are made to be used every day, not just displayed. I believe functional objects should carry both beauty and durability. Each piece is designed to enhance everyday rituals — drinking tea, sharing a meal, or simply enjoying the tactile pleasure of the clay in your hands.
